Dust Mite Proof Covers
What Are Mite Proof Encasings?
Maybe you've asked, "Can I help protect myself and my family from asthma and allergies?" The answer is Yes! Microscopic dust mites, often the proven causes of allergic symptoms such as sneezing, sniffling, and swollen, itchy nose and eyes, are alive and well in most every bedroom, regardless of how fastidiously you clean. Allergy specialists and even some medical studies state that using zippered mattress covers on your mattress, pillows & box spring will help stop dust mite allergens lurking within your bedding from becoming airborne and breathed in while you sleep. Unlike the uncomfortable plastic covers of the past that were hot and crinkly, ours are cool and extremely comfortable - a real pleasure to sleep on. Like an invisible shield, they completely trap mites and their allergen inside the cover to give you the perfect barrier of protection while extending the life of pillows and mattresses. Today's covers are made of soft, comfortable, breathable fabrics that protect you and pamper you, too!
Why Allergy Mattress Covers From National Allergy Make A Difference:
A mattress protector is an essential piece of bedding that can help keep your mattress clean and protected while also increasing its longevity. Mattress protectors come in many different materials based on specific needs and requirements. In particular, to shield a mattress from stains, spills, allergens, and other elements, a thin layer of material called a mattress protector is put on top of the mattress. Like an additional deep fitted sheet, mattress covers are made to fit tightly over your mattress and are simple to remove and wash as necessary. Many even come with a zipper to completely encase and protect the mattress from allergens, bed bugs, and dust mites.

Pillow Covers:
Under Your Pillowcases - Forget crinkly, uncomfortable covers. Our membrane-free pillow covers disappear onto your pillow but protect you night after night.
Pillow protectors help shield your bedding from unwanted allergens and bacteria, as well as provide an extra barrier against moisture, stains, and everyday wear. When you lay your head down to sleep, it probably never crosses your mind that your own pillow could be making you sick. But it's true, there could be something on your pillowcase or inside your pillow that's harming your health: dust mites.
These microscopic invaders and their waste are a common household allergen that's found in bedding, mattresses, pillows, upholstered furniture, curtains, and anywhere moisture and dead skin cells collect. Pillows happen to be one of their favorite homes. According to Neil Kao, MD, an allergist-immunologist in Greenville, S.C., hair, dead skin cells, sweat, and drool build up inside our pillows, creating a smorgasbord for dust mites and bad news for our health.
"Dust mite debris triggers allergies, asthma, and even eczema," says Melanie Carver, chief mission officer at the AAFA (Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America). Symptoms vary from itchy eyes and runny noses (some of which can be treated with OTC medication) to more serious symptoms like difficulty breathing and sleeping, according to the American Lung Association. For those with dust mite allergy and asthma, limiting exposure to dust mites and their allergens is a crucial step in their asthma & allergy management plan.
Pillow protectors that are certified by the AAFA to help reduce the accumulation of dust mites truly can help. A pillow protector is designed to defend your pillows against dirt, dust, and damage. They act as an additional barrier between your pillow and the pillow case. You fit them on just as you would a regular pillow case – with some of the best pillow protectors featuring a zippered closure and or fold-over flap.
AAFA-certified pillowcase protectors are equipped with microscopic pores that are too small for dead skin cells and hairs to pass through into the pillow. What's more, dust mites will have a tough time building their home without a food source.
Finding The Right Pillow Protector
Finding the right pillow protector or zippered pillow covers that will keep dust mites out of your pillow can be a difficult task. First, you'll want to check that the product label displays a fabric pore size (size of the openings between the weave) of ideally 6 micrometers/microns or less. You'll also want to look for the words "woven fabric," which helps ensure the pillow protector is made from a tightly knit material to limit dust mite exposure.
It's also important to check out dust mite pillow covers that are certified by the AAFA. These will specifically say "Certified Asthma & Allergy Friendly" or "Meets Certification Standards" on the packaging, along with the AAFA logo. Zippered pillow case covers with this certification have been tested to ensure they block more than 99 percent of dust mite allergens before the first wash, and 95 percent after 18 washes.
Even with these things to watch out for, you're not done yet. Zipped a protector over your pillow isn't enough. Remember to wash the pillow and the protector regularly. For example, the AAFA recommends that bedding materials be washed weekly in hot water to remove dust mites. However, don't forget that repeated washings can degrade a pillow protector's permeability. So always be sure to check the manufacturer's recommendation for the right time to replace it. A good rule of thumb is to replace pillows every two years or sooner. What's more, by using a certified asthma and allergy pillow protector, you may even extend the life of your pillow.
Box Spring Covers:
You may not be familiar with a box spring cover, although the concept is quite simple. A box spring cover is a protective barrier that fully wraps around the box spring and has no drop. It's particularly popular for those with modern platform bedsteads where bed skirts can't provide a practical solution to concealing or covering a box spring appropriately. It also helps keep the box spring clean and provides a more polished look, as well as compliment bed linens. A box spring encasement is also designed to help protect your mattress, box spring, and pillows from bed bugs, dust mites, and other allergens. They are also often waterproof and zippered while remaining breathable. They come in a variety of sizes for box springs of different sizes.
