Why & When To Replace Your Pillow
Your old pillow may look fine. It still looks like a pillow, after all, right? But if you think your ten-year-old pillow is in the same condition as it was when you first bought it, think again. Even high-quality pillows can lose their shape after a few years of daily use. This can result in improper neck support while you sleep. Which in turn can result in neck and back pain, among other issues.
Besides losing their shape, pillows accumulate germs and allergens over time, so it's very important to wash them frequently and replace them every one to two years as needed. This is especially true if you are someone who suffers from allergies on a regular basis. Allergens like dust mites and dust mite waste can accumulate inside your pillow and trigger allergic reactions, resulting in poorer sleep. Signs that it's probably time for a new pillow include neck pain, sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, changes in sleep position, pillow odor or discoloration, lumpiness, and a lack of resilience or structure to the pillow.
So, how long exactly do pillows last, and how frequently should you replace yours? It's true that proper care and cleaning can and will extend a pillow's lifespan. However, sometimes it's better to throw it out and replace it with a fresh one. We'll help you find out what's best for you and your pillow and tell you everything you need to know about replacing and caring for your pillows. It's even possible for some pillows to be repurposed or donated if they are in good enough condition.
Exactly Why You Should Replace Your Pillow –
Did you know the AAFA, or Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, recommends replacing your pillow every two years or sooner? This is due to the fact that pillows can become really nasty over time. They can accumulate germs, dirt, sweat, and oils, making them a real problem for those with sensitive skin. In addition, allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and even mold can build up within them when used for very long periods of time. Pillows can also lose their shape and lead to sore muscles and increasingly uncomfortable sleeping positions. All of this can lead to all sorts of awful symptoms and side effects, including muscle aches, acne, skin irritation, sneezing, restlessness, headaches, itchy, watery eyes, scratchy throats, and more.
Moreover, the dust mites inside your pillow are so tiny you can't see them, yet they can quickly multiply within your pillow unless protective measures are taken. They survive off your dead skin cells and can live almost anywhere. Many people can be allergic to both the dust mites themselves and their waste. Additionally, after two years, about 10% of the weight of your pillow can be attributed to dead dust mites and their waste. What more of a reason is there to replace your pillow every two years than that?
Signs it's Time To Replace Your Pillow
Losing its shape: When a pillow becomes lumpy, misshapen, or even deflated, it’s a real sign that the pillow is at the end of its lifespan. You can try fluffing your pillow each morning and night to help improve its supportiveness. Many pillows, including our BedCare™ All-Cotton Mite Proof Pillows, can benefit from being put in a dryer on low heat for 15-30 minutes to reshape and add fluffiness.
Odors or stains Always check for stains and smells on your pillow when you change and wash your pillowcase. If you find new odors or discoloration, be sure to wash the case properly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. We recommend using Mite-Y Clean All-Natural Laundry Detergent and Mite-Y Clean All-Natural Laundry Additive to remove and neutralize allergens, dust mites, and odors.
Allergies: Have you ever noticed that you wake up sneezing, with congestion, or itchy eyes? There's a good chance your pillow is the reason. Pillows are notorious for holding onto allergens, from pet dander to pollen, mold, and dust mites. You can fight these allergens by washing pillows with an Anti-Allergen Laundry Detergent and protecting your pillow with our zippered and fully encased BedCare™ All-Cotton Allergy Pillow Covers.
Sleep Changes: You may have been using the same pillow for years but suddenly notice neck pain, back pain, or sleep changes. This can be due to physical body changes like weight loss or gain, injuries, or a new mattress. All of these reasons can affect the type of pillow you'll need for a perfect night's sleep. If you notice any of these symptoms or seem to be getting less sleep, tossing, or turning at night, then it could be your pillow is no longer supporting you, and it's time for a new one.
Which Types Of Pillows Last Longest?
You may not know this, but your pillow's lifespan is a direct result of what it's made from and how you use and care for it. Most high-quality pillows can help you get a truly good night's sleep. In fact, if you have a good pillow under your head, it makes it that much easier to fall asleep and stay asleep at night. Pillows can be made from any number of materials, including memory foam, latex, down, cotton, polyester, and more. However, these materials are not all created equal, and some tend to last longer and fare better than others.
Cotton Pillows
For example, high-quality, tightly woven, 100% all-cotton pillows, like our BedCare™ All-Cotton Mite-Proof Pillows, are made from finely woven cotton. This ensures the weave is so tight that allergens cannot pass through them, but air can. As a result, they remain cool and breathable while helping keep dust mites, bed bugs, and other allergens from affecting you while you sleep. Our All-Cotton Allergy Pillows feature a 300 thread count with 100% cotton shell and polyester fill that is luxurious and soft to the touch.
Silk-Lined Pillows
Another high-quality type of pillow is a silk-lined pillow like the SmartSilk Silk Lined Pillows we carry. All of our SmartSilk™ silk-lined pillows are certified asthma & allergy friendly™ from the AAFA. These silk pillows are made with a premium 100% pure and natural cotton shell and 100% Grade A Tussah Silk lining. They are then filled with a hypoallergenic microfiber fill and finished with double-needle stitching and corded pipe trim. We also carry two other types of silk-lined pillows as well, including a SmartSilk Silk Lined Travel Pillow - Set of 2 perfect for lumbar support while sitting or driving for long periods, and a SmartSilk Silk Lined Body Pillow that helps to support you better while sleeping on your side.
Silk pillows naturally help increase air circulation. As a result, they promote better body temperature regulation, helping you stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Moreover, they naturally help to wick away moisture, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout the night. Silk also boasts natural antibacterial and antiallergen properties as well. This means silk is naturally sensitive skin and allergen-friendly. These incredible benefits are especially helpful for those who are hot sleepers or suffer from night sweats, asthma, allergies, and skin sensitivities.
Wool Pillows
The Sleep & Beyond myWoolly® Adjustable Natural Wool Washable Pillow is an ideal upgrade for anyone replacing an old, flattened, or unsupportive pillow and wanting long-term sleep health and comfort. This fully adjustable, washable wool pillow is designed for sleepers who want complete control over loft and firmness. The unique wool “puffs” allow you to raise or lower the height effortlessly, ensuring proper alignment for your head, neck, and spine, an essential factor when switching to a new pillow to prevent stiffness or tension. Inside, natural Shropshire wool delivers exceptional temperature regulation, helping prevent the “wet-and-soggy pillow” experience that often develops as older pillows wear down and trap heat and moisture. Wool’s natural moisture-wicking properties help reduce night sweats, overheating, and tossing and turning, enhancing comfort during the transition from an old pillow to a healthier, more breathable option. The pillow also includes a 100% natural cotton sateen quilted cover (300TC) that improves airflow and adds durability and softness. For allergy-sensitive sleepers replacing old pillows due to dust mites or buildup, the wool fill naturally resists dust mites, mold, and mildew, promoting a cleaner, hypoallergenic sleep environment. Completely machine washable, including the wool fill and outer case, the myWoolly® pillow remains fresh, supportive, and sanitary long after lower-quality pillows would need replacing. Eco-friendly materials and durable construction make it a sustainable investment, available in Standard, Queen, and King sizes and backed by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.
The Sleep & Beyond myMerino® Organic Merino Wool Pillow is a premium replacement option for sleepers upgrading from worn-out pillows that trap allergens, flatten quickly, or rely on synthetic materials. Made with certified organic merino wool and encased in certified organic cotton percale (270TC), this pillow offers a chemical-free, hypoallergenic sleeping surface ideal for individuals with allergies, asthma, or multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS). Organic merino wool naturally resists dust mites, mold, mildew, and bed bugs, common issues in older pillows, helping create a cleaner, healthier bedroom environment. Its moisture-wicking performance eliminates the common “wet-and-soggy pillow” problem and reduces restlessness, while its year-round temperature regulation keeps sleepers cool, dry, and comfortable regardless of season. The natural wool aroma, which may be present at first, is a sign of genuine purity and dissipates within a few days to create a soothing, chemical-free sleep space. Lightweight organic wool fill provides gentle support and comfort, making the pillow successful at delivering the essential benefits all sleepers look for when replacing a pillow: comfort, support, and better health. Eco-friendly reusable cotton packaging and third-party organic certifications ensure full transparency and sustainable production. With long-lasting durability, merino wool outperforms many other bedding materials over time, offering years of reliable comfort and value with proper care. Available in Standard and Queen sizes, the myMerino® pillow comes with a reassuring 5-year manufacturer’s warranty, making it a strong, health-focused choice when replacing an old pillow.
Above all, no matter which type of pillow you choose, to promote the longevity of your pillow, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends that you protect your pillows from dust mites by using zippered pillow covers. Our BedCare™ All-Cotton Allergy Pillow Cover Fabric is Certified Asthma & Allergy Friendly™ by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America.
How To Properly Care For Your Pillow -
Once you have chosen a new pillow for yourself, you can do a few things to help keep it in as good condition as possible for as long as possible. Namely, you'll want to wash or clean your pillow regularly with an anti-allergen laundry detergent. Keep in mind that the care instructions vary depending on the type of material, fill, and pillow you choose.
For instance, down pillows or synthetic pillows can usually be washed in a washing machine on a delicate cycle, but it's smart to always check the manufacturer's instructions before washing. Run them through two rinse cycles after the wash, as soapy residue can linger and will cause natural down feathers to clump. Next, you can put them in the dryer in a low-heat setting if the care instructions say this is safe to do. Lastly, be sure to fluff feather and down pillows after drying so they stay supportive and structured.
Down alternative pillows are a great option if you are allergic to down and you want a low-maintenance pillow that can be easily washed in a washing machine. However, it's important to note that most memory foam pillows and latex pillows can only be spot-cleaned and then air-dried due to their materials being very sensitive to heat. These types of materials will often deteriorate and distort when exposed to high-heat temperatures inside a washing machine and dryer. Some may be able to be soaked in warm water with a mild soap or detergent and then squeezed out and air dried. Be sure to check with the manufacturer's recommendations before doing so.
