What is TENCEL™ ?

You may have heard the word "Tencel" floating around the textile industry lately, but what is "Tencel"? Well, for starters, the word itself is simply a brand name for Lyocell. And Lyocell is a sustainable fiber made from wood pulp. Although there are many types of Lyocell in the world, TENCEL™ tops it as one of the most high-quality forms.

TENCEL™ is created through an environmentally sustainable process. Specifically, TENCEL™ is made from sustainably sourced raw wood called "regenerated cellulose." To clarify, this type of wood is formed when raw wood is harvested, churned into wood pulp, broken down by an organic chemical solvent, and then pushed through a machine to form fibers.

The end result? Fibers that are ultra-plush and soft like wisps of clouds! Fibers made from TENCEL™ Lyocell are recognized for their supreme softness and eco-friendly practices. In addition, TENCEL™ Fibers are famous for their moisture absorption qualities (70% more absorbent than cotton). Furthermore, because they're breathable, waterproof, and naturally antibacterial, they make the perfect material for our BedCare™ Fitted Eucalyptus TENCEL™ Hypoallergenic & Waterproof Mattress Protectors!

Notable Traits of TENCEL™ Lyocell Fibers:

  • Durable: TENCEL™ fibers are longer lasting, wrinkle resistant, and easy to wash, maintain, and take care of.
  • Ultra-Soft: Incredibly comfortable and silky to the touch, TENCEL'S™ gentleness on the skin cannot be beaten.
  • Moisture Absorbent: TENCEL™ fibers offer superior moisture-wicking abilities to keep skin cool and breathably comfortable.
  • Breathable: Lyocell TENCEL™ fibers are extremely breathable, which helps prevent sweating during the night.
  • Antibacterial: Naturally antibacterial, TENCEL™ prevents the growth of bacteria to help banish unwanted breakouts.
  • Eco-Friendly: Created from sustainably sourced wood in a closed loop process where 99% of water and solvent is reused and recycled.

What Makes TENCEL™ So Sustainable?

TENCEL™ is considered one of the most environmentally sustainable fabrics in the world. Not only is TENCEL™ great because it's made from natural plant materials, but the manufacturing process of TENCEL™ also requires much less energy and water use than cotton or rayon. Moreover, TENCEL™ is even biodegradable, which means it can be decomposed by the earth's natural organisms!

The wood and pulp used to create TENCEL™ fabric come from certified and controlled sources. This means that the wood used will not be overharvested or allowed to decrease the quality of the land or soil it came from. Additionally, the farming of the woods for TENCEL™ requires no irrigation or pesticides. This is important because, comparatively, plants like cotton often use excessive amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that can lead to soil degradation. Soil degradation is simply a decline in the quality of soil (usually its minerals and nutrients), which plants require to survive, grow, and thrive.

When it comes to the water and chemical usage process, TENCEL™ uses a closed loop production process. This means that 99% of the water and chemicals used are reused and recycled again and again to produce new fibers and reduce waste. Unlike cotton, bamboo, and rayon, which use various harsh chemicals to break down pulp, TENCEL™ only uses an organic chemical called amine-oxide, which is non-toxic.

In particular, the organic chemical amine oxide is actually recyclable, which allows it to be reused again and again in the manufacturing process. Additionally, the production process produces no harmful byproducts since all water and chemicals are continually reused instead of left discarded or disposed of to contaminate the earth.

The making of TENCEL™ fibers also produces no harmful byproducts. To compare, for 1/10th of the water it takes to generate cotton fabrics, 10x more TENCEL™ fabric is able to be created. Moreover, the cotton plant takes a much larger amount of water and pesticides to grow. It also releases a lot of chemicals back into the land and water after production. Meanwhile, TENCEL™ is able to minimize and reduce these harmful effects.

Why is TENCEL™ Bedding Ideal For Sleep?

  • Luxuriously Soft & Gentle: TENCEL™ is 2x softer than cotton and non-irritating, making it perfect for people with sensitive skin. Unlike sometimes scratchy cotton fibers, Tencel Lyocell fibers are closer to silk in texture.
  • Perfect for Sensitive Skin: TENCEL™ is 3x more breathable than cotton and hypoallergenic. This is important for preventing skin sensitivities. Tencel is also non-irritating and antibacterial, which is ideal for preventing breakouts.
  • Virtually Made for Hot Sleepers: TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers remain breathable and cool and help prevent sweating during the night! This is thanks to their ability to be up to 70% more moisture-wicking than cotton.
  • Environmentally Friendly: TENCEL™ is one of the world's most sustainable materials thanks to its manufacturing process. This makes it great for the environment and you!
  • Durability:TENCEL™ bedding and mattress covers wrinkle significantly less than cotton. In addition, they are infinitely easier to take care of, don’t shrink in the wash, and are more resistant to breaking down over time.
