Assess® Full Range Peak Flow Meter by Respironics, measures the peak speed at which you expel air from your lungs (called peak expiratory flow or PEF), and is an essential tool in gauging how well your airways are working. The higher the PEF, the more open your airways. The lower the PEF, the more narrow your airways (as in asthma). Using the Assess peak flow meter can help you identify triggers, detect subtle changes, and alert you to asthma flare-ups before they occur.   • Cleaning:
  • Please follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning the peak flow meter. Generally, the device can be cleaned once a week using warm water with a mild liquid soap, then rinsed and air dried. The device is dishwasher safe (top rack). Do not boil or autoclave.

  • Replacement:
  • Replace the peak flow meter every 2 years. For multi-patient use, replace more frequently.

  • Multi-Patient Use:
  • Assess peak flow meters are designed and intended for single-patient use. The device may be used for multi-patient use so long as it is cleaned thoroughly after each use and disposable mouthpieces are used. Healthcare providers are reminded to instruct their patients to inhale before placing the instrument to their mouths. Adult and Pediatric Mouthpieces for the Assess Peak Flow Meter (bags of 100) are available through National Allergy Supply. Simply use in place of the reusable mouthpiece that comes with the device.

    To further reduce the risk of cross-contamination during multi-patient screenings, one-way valve Safety disposable mouthpieces (Respironics Part # HS713¹) are recommended. The one-way valve prevents patients from inadvertently breathing in air through the meter during PEF testing.
