The Problem Of Dust Mites & Bed Bugs

Zippered Encasings Are Covers That Seal In And Seal Out Allergen & Bed Bugs - Click Here To Learn More About Healthy BeddingWhat are zippered encasings?

Zippered encasings are kind of like zippered sandwich bags that encase the sandwich so that nothing gets in or out. It's the same principle for your bed. You put your mattress, box spring, and pillows in "big zippered sandwich bags" to keep dust mite allergen and bed bugs that are in your bed from getting out, and also to keep dust mites and bed bugs from getting in.

Fortunately, pillow and mattress encasements no longer have to be plastic like a sandwich bag. Now there are cool, quiet fabrics that are miteproof and bed-bug-proof. Unlike stiff plastic encasings of the past, new fabrics are woven very tightly like a fine sheet with a high thread count such as our BedCare Elegance, BedCare Ultra, and BedCare Supreme (see more about pore size below). Now there are also non-woven fabrics, like BedCare Economy, that are very soft and breathable. Even BedCare Classic, with a thin polyuretane backing bonded to a soft polyester fabric, is cool and quiet.

Who needs bedding and mattress encasements?

There are two main reasons to put your mattress, box spring, and pillows in zippered encasings - dust mites and bed bugs. Dust mites are so small, you need a microscope to see them. They do not bite and are only harmful to people who are allergic to their detritus (dried feces and body parts). If you are allergic to dust mite allergen, you may wake up stuffy, sneezing or with a headache. A mattress encasement and other bedding encasements may help alleviate your symptoms and are recommended by doctors for people with dust mite allergy. Our customers repeatedly tell us what a difference encasings make to their dust mite allergy symptoms.

The second reason to choose to encase your mattress, box spring, and pillows is for bed bug protection. Unlike dust mites, bed bugs are large enough to be seen with the naked eye - 1/8th to 3/16th of an inch long. They are reddish-brown, flattened, oval, and wingless. If there are bed bugs in your home, one of their favorite places to hide is in your bed. This is because they are nocturnal and come out to feed at night - on you. Encasings will keep any bed bugs already in your mattress, box spring, or pillows from getting out. Encasings will also prevent bed bugs from getting into your mattress, box spring or pillows.

I grew up with the saying, "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite." I thought it was a nursery rhyme. Unfortunately, bed bugs are very real and on the rise. According to researchers at the University of Kentucky, bed bugs "are increasingly being encountered in homes, apartments, hotels, motels, health care facilities, dormitories, shelters, schools, and modes of transport. Other places where bed bugs sometimes appear include movie theaters, laundries/dry cleaners, furniture rental outlets and office buildings."

Independent test data proved bed bugs and their eggs could not get through our fabrics or zippers. While encasings will protect you from bed bugs that might be living in your mattress, box spring, and pillows and will keep bed bugs from invading your bed, it would be necessary to contact a pest control professional to rid your home of an infestation.

Why buy BedCare encasings?

Our Encasings Are Manufactured In The USABedCare encasings are a good choice for several reasons. One we are proud of is that the BedCare line of allergen encasings are cut and sewn in the USA by true craftsmen who pay close attention to quality. We know these encasings are made to last, so we offer a Lifetime Warranty on all the woven-fabric encasings and a 10-year warranty on the non-woven fabric.

Pore Size Is Important To The Efficacy Of An Encasing - Click Here To Learn MoreIn addition, our encasings are a good choice because they are made from carefully selected fabrics to be sure they are both miteproof and comfortable. All of our fabrics have been independently tested for pore size - the size of the natural gaps in the fabric from weaving. Obviously, they have to be very small so that microscopic dust mites and dust mite allergen cannot get through. To the right is a magnification of how the weave of fabric looks. It might be easier to understand if you think of a basket weave. You can see the spaces where the slats pass over and under each other. It is the same with fabric, just on a much smaller scale.

Another reason we believe in our encasings is that they have been independently tested, so we know they work. Below are results from an independent lab, IBT Reference Labs. They performed rigorous tests on all our fabrics except BedCare Classic because the polyurethane backing does not have pores and effectively covers the pores in the fabric. The following chart shows the airflow and amount of mite allergen and cat allergen (used because it is ten times smaller than mite allergen) that passes through the other four of our encasing styles versus the lab-control poly-cotton fabric.

Which BedCare encasing is the best?

Maybe you are thinking encasings would be a good idea for yourself, your child, your grandchild, or someone you know. But there are five fabrics. Which one is the best? The important thing to remember is that all five are equally effective against dust mite allergen and bed bugs.

National Allergy offers 5 fabrics for your mattress so you can pick the one that best suits your needs and likes.
  1. If you like to be economical, you may want to choose BedCare Economy that offers full, breathable protection in a non-woven fabric.
  2. If you need for your encasings to be waterproof, you may want to choose BedCare Classic that has a polyurethane membrane bonded to the back of a soft polyester fabric.
  3. If you like a satiny-softness, you may want to choose BedCare Supreme made of 100% polyester.
  4. If you like the feel of cotton, you may want to choose BedCare Ultra that is a polyester/cotton blend with the feel of a fine sheet.
  5. If you like the best, you may want to choose BedCare Elegance, our premier microfiber fabric with excellent wicking properties for coolness and superior workmanship for top quality comfort.
